“I’ll do it later” is the most convincing yet deceptive phrase we tell ourselves when we need to get something done. Procrastination often feels good in the moment – it provides a false sense of motivation towards the future. Yet, the future arrives and the feeling we have towards the task doesn’t change. Eat the Frog in the Morning
Doing the hardest thing first thing everyday is one of the most effective ways to quit procrastinating. The renewed strength you have in the morning can help you focus on the task at hand before other things start to fight for your attention. Moreover, you are more likely to be motivated when your mind is not yet contaminated with the pressures of the day.
Delegate what you can
Sometimes thinking you can do it all when you really can’t is the main reason you procrastinate. Having too much on your plate can sap your motivation and make you lose interest. If the task at hand can be done by someone else, don’t keep going back and forth with it. Delegate it and get down to the thing that needs your attention the most.
Set a Deadline
Working with no deadline in sight is an easy way to get aimless and procrastinate. By setting a deadline, you are inclined to give your best and work hard to meet that deadline. If the work assigned to you already has a deadline, try setting yours a tad bit ahead – that way you are able to meet it with little headache.
Get an Accountability Partner
Having someone to answer to is another way to make sure you get things done on time. Working by yourself often makes you lazy and undisciplined. However, having an accountability partner only works if the person truly keeps you in check. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to rely on a friend, but if that friendship makes them too lenient on you, you won’t get anything done. Rely on someone who can set clear boundaries and expectations when it comes to getting work done.
Eliminate Distractions
Mobile phones, meaningless chatter and all the things that fight for your attention must be eliminated. You can only beat procrastination if you are fully focused. It’s easy to find motivation to work if there are no forms of distraction around. If your distraction is people, excuse yourself, or plainly ask them to give you some space. If the distractions are things, remove them from your immediate sight.
