growth mindset

If you are reading this, you are part of the narrow percentage of millennials who are making a conscious effort to improve themselves. Congratulations! As much as growth may seem like a big stage we might never reach, it is important to remember that it is a process which demands that we take little steps everyday. In no order of importance, below are five key things to keep in mind while making this journey;

Everything has consequences

If you look back on the pattern of your life, you will realize that everything you’ve ever done has amounted to something in one way or another. Even something as trivial as constantly brushing your teeth has helped your health immensely. Same goes for any other habit you have or action you’ve taken.

If you begin to realize how this works, you will take a more conscious approach to your life instead of just wallowing in it.

Time is your biggest ally

The greatest friend you have in this world is time but it’s not truly on your side.

As much as this irony can be unsettling, it is a call to stop putting off things and start using your time wisely. Most millennials, especially the younger ones can’t seem to believe how quickly they’ve grown.

Whereas some cannot believe the age they’ve turned, some do not even know what they have to show for such  an age. Truth is, this growth did not happen overnight. It took hours turning into days and days compounding into years. What we must consider is what we do with those hours.

A good place to start would be to keep track of your screen time. Tracking how much time you spend on your phone is one way to find out where all your time is going and what exactly you are doing with it. When you start accounting for the time you spend, you will adopt a more conscious approach to doing things that matter. Wasted hours eventually become wasted years.

Treating people nicely goes a long way

If you’ve ever received a random act of kindness from someone, chances are you haven’t forgotten about it. It could be ages ago, but you still think fondly of the act or the person behind it. Same applies to every human that walks this planet.

People remember good deeds. A stranger remembers when you held the door open and smiled or when you said a kind word. There is a possibility that given a chance, they would like to return the favor in one way or another. This is why you must endeavor to be nice to as many people as you come across. Not just those you know but even strangers. As much as this will make you feel good about yourself, it also goes a long way in tuning karma in your favor.

People are watching but no one really cares

Now here is the dicey situation older millennials wish they knew much earlier. People are watching – no doubt. People are eager to see what moves you make next, but that is only because our lives are staged on a digital platform where everybody’s job is to watch.

Yes, they are looking forward to your next update but so are they to anybody else they follow. They only see you in the brief moment you pop up on their feed but once they zoom in, like, leave a comment and scroll up, that’s it — they are off to see someone else. They don’t register you at the back of their minds or indeed care what it is you’re doing. Which is why you must make sure you’re really living for you and not what the trend says.

Once you start being honest with yourself about what you genuinely want out of life and stop seeking to please others, you will start to see a massive growth in your life.

Wishes alone do not work

As much as this sentence may sound  cliché, it is in no way overstated. Millennials have been inflicted by the plague of ‘more dreams; less actions’. Most of them bear great dreams and huge ideas but they are mostly built on wishful thinking and a lazy attitude. Many people ride on faith and manifestations which are not really bad things but do not materialize without actions to back them.

Dream as big as you want, make a million wishes and recite all the affirmations but get to work. Make a plan and begin to execute it. It is the only way to achieve anything worthwhile.

Key Takeaways;

  1. Everything has consequences
  2. Time is your biggest ally
  3. Treating people nicely goes a long way
  4. People are watching but no one really cares
  5. Wishes alone do not work
